Formed by Yuya Tsukahara and Yu Kakio in 2006, contact Gonzo is the name for both the group and the methodology of their practice. Having changed some of the members throughout the years, contact Gonzo work among four members: Yuya Tsukahara, Keigo Mikajiri, Takuya Matsumi and NAZE. Started from physical collisions, they constructed their own idyllic sublime theory. They use a variety of forms of expression, including improvisational performance, video, photography and book editing and they participate in numerous exhibitions and dance festivals in Japan and abroad.
In Noseden Art Line 2017, they performed “Mountain Surfing”; a performative action of sliding down the Mt. Nose Myoken slopes. For this year’s event, they will carry a rock and walk overnight to Mt. Nose Myoken from their studio in Nakatsu, Osaka Prefecture. They will try to transmit various indications and strains of their walk to a selected audience of 25 people, who will await their arrival on the mountain summit. The audiences will listen to their real-time positional information, footsteps, and conversations while listening to tunes selected by DJs and transmitted around the world. They will wait for contact Gonzo’s arrival and spend a special night, cut off from everyday life. Various indications and pieces of information about their walk will be distributed online, so that people living at the foot of the mountain will be able to use the information to follow contact Gonzo or wait for them to pass by. The drill to welcome the morning, where an event somewhere between pilgrimage and play will take place at the site and off-sites, is about to begin.
