Takafumi Fukasawa was born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1984 and currently lives in Hokkaido.
He develops projects which focus on places, their histories, and characteristics of people connected to the places and which explore ways to coexist with others, in various places in Japan. He extracts individual histories, values, and views which might be buried by the big-H history and creates small, uninstalled public spheres in collaboration with people who happen to be there. His projects include: “Tokuino Bank”, in which he operated a bank for people to exchange their “tokui” (what they are good at) with each other instead of exchanging money. And “Hitachi-Satake City”, in which he launched an imaginary municipality to reconnect the buried regional history with the people’s activities taking place there in present times.
For Noseden Art Line 2019, Fukasawa will transform an empty house in Kofudai into a movie theater for the new town, in collaboration with the town’s residents. He will share the process of setting up the theater: discussing how the theater should be, creating the environment, planning screening programs, archiving private movies and home videos of the Kofudai residents, producing new movies, etc. with the residents. Through the project, he will try to materialize the history of the place, which includes things that happened before the new town was built, and gazes towards others, which always exist in people’s life. Together with the people who gather at the theater, he will try to come up with a “belief” for the residents of the new town, who work outside of the new town, to create a connection with the new town so they feel more rooted there.
